Sur is a town located in the coast of Oman. Southeast to Muscat, it has been favoured by sailors for centuries because of its location in shipping courses that connect the Red Sea, East Africa and the Arabian Gulf to India. Gaining a reputation for building strong, solid ships like the sambuk and ghanjah that were used for pearl shipping, it is now known for its dhows. Taking as long as almost three to six months to be built, the craftsmen build it from memory with no reference or plan whatsoever. The teaks from which dhows are built generally came from India. Simple and very basic tools such as axe, hammer, drills and chisel are used even today to construct these massive ships that last for sixty to hundred years.
Two methods were primarily used for building these boats. In the first, wood is laid adjacent to each other and drilled by hand. Then rope made from coconut fibre is inserted through these holes and used to tie the timber together. The holes are then covered and sealed with cotton or fibre soaked in fish, sesame or coconut oil. In the other method, the only variation is that nails are used. Keeping with the past, today’s craftsmen still add a carving or other decorative patterns on the bow. This is generally done by hand.
