With the advent of Western medication and the adoption of same by Asians, the Siriraj Hospital had come into existence and has been serving the nation’s and regions remedial needs for over a century now. The far sighted thinking of King Rama V of the Chakri Dynasty has been what underpinned the establishment of this fine healthcare hub in the capital city of Bangkok. The hospital cum medical college has endowed Thailand with doctors and nurses who have in turn helped develop the medical centre and school further.

The Siriraj Medical Museum is located within the hospital premises and provides a learning opportunity for the aspiring doctors and nurses as well as laymen who wish to be enlightened about certain diseases or conditions. The exhibits are housed in six separate sections spread out through different clinical departments of the museum. The exhibits include artefacts, specimens, equipment and tools that have been utilized by the medical sciences over the last hundred years.

There is a section dedicated to pathology, or the study of diseases which involves the dissection of bodies to identify the causes of death. There is also an area on anatomy, which is the study of the construction of living organisms, while visitors will find specimens of different creatures, which assist the students in understanding and analyzing the human body as well. The other four permanent display areas concentrate on Thai traditional medicine, congenital disorders, toxicology and forensic pathology. A remarkable exhibit in the forensic pathology section is of Thailand’s first serial killer in recent times. His corpse has been mummified and placed in a glass cabinet to deter people from being involved in crimes.

In addition to the six permanent museum areas, a temporary display section is opened from time to time based on the concurrent occurrences. During the tragic Tsunami in 2004 that affected most parts of South Asia and South East Asia, this temporary section was devoted to the subject.
