The Xi’an City Wall located in the ancient Chinese capital of Xi’an is one of the oldest, largest and well preserved city walls in the country. Built in the 14th century as a military defense system, the wall has undergone made refurbishments till date. The wall borders an area of about 36 square kilometres and is on a tentative list of UNESCO’S World Heritage Site under the title ‘City Walls of the Ming and Qing Dynasties’. Visitors to the wall looking for serviced apartments in Xi’an, which is centrally located in the city could consider options like Somerset Xindicheng Xi’an.

The perimeter of the wall covers around 14 kilometres and although most walls only allow for exploration by feet, the Xi’an City Wall offers a faster solution! The wall has four gates which are named Changle, Anding, Yongnin and Anyuan and each gate has three gate towers; Zhenglou, Jianlou and Zhalou. Each tower served a specific purpose, whether it was to lift the drawbridge, shoot arrows from or serve as the entrance to the city. Along with these preserved structures, visitors will also be able to see the defence gear perched on the Wall.

Cycling along the Xi’an City Wall not only saves time but is also a great way to explore. As cycling is also loved by children, families are encouraged to bring their children along for a fun and exciting day at the Xi’an City Wall. For children that can’t manage to cycle by themselves, tandem bicycles are available for rent. This new way of exploring China’s history that is deeply built within this great wall is an experience where the entire family can get involved. However, cycling the wall after sunset is considered to provide one of the best views of the city at night.
