The Sprengel Museum opened in 1979 in Hannover houses the most magnificent and extensive collection of modern art in Germany. The museum originates from a generous donation made by Dr. Bernhard Sprengel in 1969 where he gave his extensive collection of modern art for the benefit of the city of Hannover as well as a substantial sum of money for the construction of the museum. Through time the city of Hannover and Lower Saxony have contributed their share to the construction, maintenance and development of the museum. The permanent collection and diverse temporary exhibitions held of both local and foreign artists of the 20th and 21st century has made Sprengel Museum one of the most important art museums of the world.
The collection set in order of priority, includes works of French Cubism, German Expressionism and abstract art from the post war eras. Minimalism, New Realism, Informal Art, Conceptual art and post-minimal art along with more modern form of painting by light; photography and media are given important focus in the collection. A unique character of the collection is the formation of focus groups. The ensemble of a few of the greatest artists of the century including works of Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Emil Nolde, Fernand Léger, Paul Klee and Max Beckmann are displayed in the many galleries of the museum. The Kurt Schwitter’s archive is one of the highlights of the museum as well as the ‘Abstract Cabinet’ of El Lissitzky introduced in the 1920s and 1930s.  Another special attraction is the rooms designed by the artists. The ‘Abstract Cabinet’ and Merz Building by Kurt Schwitters are two such spectacular rooms that depict two very different approaches to design of artistic space. A few of the other noted artists include Hans Arp, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Lyonel Feininger, James Turrell, Keith Sonnier and Emil Schumacher.
The original building designed by Peter and Ursula Trint (of Cologne) and Dieter Quast (of Heidelberg) has undergone extension in 1992 and in 2012. The current extension is mainly to house the collections of Niki de Saint Phalle and the Hannoverian artist Kurt Schwitters. The new building is also scheduled to host one-off international exhibitions. The Museum is a must see for all contemporary art lovers.
