Bustling with energy, Hong Kong is a vibrant metropolis that blends old world charm with dynamic development. One should not forget however, that this special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China also has a rich natural diversity which can be viewed at such attractions as the Hong Kong Wetland Park.

Located in the New Territories, this popular park is an ideal place to spend a day out with the entire family learning firsthand about the importance of this ecosystem. Spread across an area of around 61 hectares, the Hong Kong Wetland Park consists of wetlands and habitats that have been specially constructed and which are home to a variety of flora and fauna.

Stream Walk gives you a chance to view life along different areas of a stream; the Upland Stream area is a place you can see such species as terrapins, while the Middle Reaches are home to Common Kingfishers and Chinese River Otters. Those heading along the Succession Walk will get a chance to travel along a boardwalk that takes you past a range of plant species including emergent plants, submerged plants, floating plants and wet woodland plants.

When traversing the Mangrove Boardwalk at the Hong Kong Wetland Park you will come across a variety of mangrove species as well as such animals as fiddler crabs and mudskippers. Not to be missed while on the Wildside Walk is a visit to the Butterfly Garden where you can observe colourful butterfly varieties in a picturesque natural setting. Make sure to also see Pui Pui, the park’s resident salt water crocodile who is housed in a special enclosure. Those interested in bird watching can make use of the bird hides along the riverside which provide a great vantage point to see such species as black-faced spoonbills and egrets.

To help you get a better understanding of wetland eco systems the park has a special attraction known as Wetland Interactive World which features themed exhibition galleries. Also at the site is the Wetland Discovery Centre, a hands-on outdoor education centre which offers a fun and interactive learning experience.
