Ketchimalai’s history can be traced all the way back to the 12th century when Yemeni travellers arrived in Sri Lanka, then known as Thambapanni. Legend claims that seven Arab royal family members, including Sultan Ashraff Waliullah, arrived in Sri Lanka in 1024 AD. Upon Waliullah’s passing, he was buried on the hill, which was then known as “Utchchamalai” meaning “high hill” in Tamil. Over time, the name morphed into the present-day “Ketchimalai.” This narrative underscores the mosque’s potential connection to the early Muslim settlers in Sri Lanka.

Architectural Elegance: A Blend of Styles

The current structure, built in 1911 by a wealthy Muslim businessman, replaced an earlier building. This white, squarish building showcases a unique architectural blend. The ornate arched exterior reflects Islamic influences, while the curving Dutch-style gables add a touch of European flair. The unusual domed minaret, crowned with a crescent and star ornament, serves as the mosque’s most prominent feature.

A Place of Serenity and Significance

Beyond its architectural beauty, Ketchimalai Mosque holds deep significance for the local Muslim community. It serves as a place of worship, offering a tranquil space for prayer and reflection. The presence of the graves of two Imams (father and son) and a madrasa (religious school) within the mosque’s grounds further reinforces its role as a spiritual and educational centre.

Location

The mosque is 13.9 km away from Kalutara town, and easily accessible by taking a right from the Beruwala Post Office. Take the Mangala Road, turn towards the Maradana Road, and reach the mosque. It is also a 10-minute drive from Heritance Ayurveda, one of the best hotels in Beruwala. Sri Lanka is blessed with many historical landmarks, and they’re almost all within easy access due to the relatively small size of the island.
