Officially launched in 1979 at the California Institute of Technology, Kidspace Children’s Museum is a community plan of the Junior League of Pasadena. Kidspace mainly dealt with a vital educational need in the San Gabriel Valley and improved the children’s right to use the arts, sciences and humanities.
Volunteers produced a sample interactive exhibit titled ‘Making Senses’ which was designed to inspire the curiosity of children. This was executed by featuring neon light displays and robotics.
Ten thousand children, parents and teachers took part in the initial exhibition which was held within a period of 6 weeks. This was a significant turn out than the expected 2,000 visitors.
As a result of this, Kidspace Children’s Museum opened in 1980 with a collection that gave children a hands-on experience.
The new Kidspace boasts of a world-class collection with outdoor learning environments of 2.2 acres. At this unique museum children can experience an earthquake; give food to giant bugs and even create their art through nature.
The museum boasts over 20 interactive exhibits, two acres of gardens, fossil digging stations, waterways and a 40-foot raindrop as well as Wisteria climbing towers which have been put in place instead of the ant farm.
Kidspace is situated at 480 N. Arroyo Boulevard in Pasadena at the west end of Brookside Park and in close proximity to the Rose Bowl stadium. This unique museum is housed within the building that previously was the Fannie Morrison Horticultural Centre. Free parking is available onsite.
For groups of ten or more children, self-guided visits are offered and should be reserved no less than two weeks in advance. During a self-guided visit children will have the opportunity to discover the museum and interactive gardens at their very own speed. Meanwhile the Discovery Program incorporates all the opportunities given in a self-guided visit and improves children’s investigation with a 30 to 45 minute lesson, planned out for individual groups.
There are many family friendly hotels in Pasadena located in close proximity to the Kidspace Children’s Museum.
