The MR Kukrit House is a museum dedicated to the late Mom Rajawongse Kukrit Pramoj, one of Thailand’s most famous writer, performer and politician, and is located in Bangkok, Thailand. The museum is composed of five houses made of teakwood, the oldest of which was built well over a century ago. The houses were built in the traditional style of the central Thai region, where the various parts are held together by special pegs or joints without the use of nails. This made the task of moving the houses from their original locations across Thailand and reassembling them at their current venue much easier than it otherwise would have been.
Just past the entrance one will come across the public hall, which is the newest addition to the compound. It acts as a venue for religious ceremonies, banquets and other functions. The hall contains a platform where the traditional Khon Dance can be performed, and the masks for the dance are kept on shelves by the platform. One can also find some interesting artefacts including an altar and a cabinet containing Buddhist scripture. A gorgeously landscaped garden can be found past the hall and the five houses are situated just beyond the garden. Filled with bonsai plants and with a fountain for a centrepiece, the garden unifies the complex.
The MR Kukrit House is not just a museum documenting the life of one of the country’s favourite writers. It is also a repository of Thailand’s cultural and historical treasures and should not be missed. The museum is located along South Sathon Road in downtown Bangkok. One can get off at the Chong Nonsi BTS Station and walk from there. It takes about twenty minutes by foot. Kukrit House is open daily from 10am to 4pm although it would be best to call ahead as sometimes the museum closes for private events.
