Le Jardin Du Roi Spice Garden is carrying on a Seychelles tradition dating back to the 18th Century when Seychelles was a hub in the spice trade in the past. The French promoted spice gardens in this nation of islands to promote spice trading in the colonies and the Le Jardin Du Roi has drawn inspiration from these 18th Century spice gardens. Located at Domain de L’enfoncement, Anse Royale, Victoria, Mahé Le Jardin Du Roi is 13 miles south of Victoria and can be reached via a steep road. Situated on a hilly terrain 02 km up from Anse Royale Beach, this spice garden covers 35 hectares of plantation land mixed with forest. Vanilla, nutmeg, citronella, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices fill the air with their aromas. In addition to spice plants it has many rare plants and is a botanist’s haven. Giant tortoises make this aromatic garden their home. The planter’s bungalow houses a one room museum showcasing the history of the spice trade in Seychelles.

The Spice Garden has a restaurant which serves delicious dishes mostly flavoured with spices from Le Jardin Du Roi itself. There is an a la carte menu on offer daily, while on Sundays there is a special fixed lunch for which prior bookings are necessary. Spice flavoured ice creams are also on offer and the Gift Shop sells spices and souvenirs. An advance guided booking tour would be required, if you want to visit Le Jardin Du Roi.
