Located at the heart of Jakarta, the Medeka Square measuring one square kilometre іn area is considered the largest square in the world. You can observe this fascinating space while residing in a Jakarta hotel such as the Alila Jakarta known to be a magnificent hotel Jakarta is quite proud of. At the centre of the square stands the Monumen Nasional signifying that this is a space of national interest while the paved land around it has been serving as the grounds for hosting national events of sorts such as military parades and civic demonstrations. Surrounded by government buildings such as the Supreme Court, National Museum of Indonesia and various government institutions, the square sees quite a lot of Jakartans on sport and recreational activities on weekends. Merdeka being the Indonesian word for freedom, the Merdeka Square used to be referred to as the Koningsplein (King’s square) during the colonial Dutch East Indies era.
