Built in 1854, the renowned Princess Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Melbourne. One among the world’s majestic Victorian theatres, Princess Theatre holds a special place. A creation of renowned architect William Pitt, the theatre had its interior designed by George Gordon. This was during the year of 1886 when the theatre was being re-developed. The cost at that time was a staggering £50,000. Losing its name as Ashley’s Amphitheatre the building took on a more regal title as Princess Theatre. After this remodelling the theatre held the pride of being the world’s first building with sliding roofs.

The Princess Theatre also has its own friendly ghost. Frederick Baker who was known under the stage name Frederick Federici was performing a part in the opera Faust. Unfortunately on the 3rd of March, he died of a heart attack during the last scene of the show.

His haunting started when he was seen by many of his fellow performers taking a bow on stage with them. They didn’t know that he had died already! Ever since every opening night, an empty space on the third row of the Dress Circle is left empty for this baritone. 80 years later a picture of the ghost appeared in a documentary film made by Kennedy Miller. In a photograph of the film set a transparent pale faced figure was observed, one that otherwise never seen all throughout that day.

The theatre has staged many famous performances including Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia, Dirty Dancing, Hairspray, Cats, The Producers and Jersey Boys. The Phantom of the Opera holds the record for the longest running play staged in Victoria.

Apart from the attraction, Melbourne also offers many other interesting sites including the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Paying a visit to all of these requires having suitable accommodation. For those who are not interested in staying in hotels Melbourne serviced accommodation is a choice you might want to look at. A Melbourne serviced apartment located throughout the city would be a safer bet. Citadines on Bourke Melbourne is one such place known for its convenient location and high quality of service.
