Visitors to the Indonesian island of Bali particularly those with an interest in nature should make it a point to visit the unique Sangeh Monkey Forest. Located in the vicinity of Ubud this is perhaps the best known of the monkey forests, of which there are several on the island.

The Sangeh Forest consists of a multitude of nutmeg trees and is regarded as a holy venerated site. Here you will find an ancient Hindu shrine dating to the 17th century and as you would expect the site contains many mischievous monkeys.

There are a few rules to keep in mind when touring the Sangeh Forest. Visitors must never tease, aggravate or pet the monkeys as such behaviour can lead to unexpected results. It is wise to obtain the services of a guide who will be knowledgeable about the forest and its simian denizens.

At the entrance to the forest, you will see in true Balinese manner an impressive guardian statue standing as a proud sentinel. Similarly visitors will notice the split gates at the entrance which feature guardian animals on either side, typical of Bali. Visitor will walk down a picturesque walkway which leads to the revered local temple. This walkway features an array of Hindu statues in customary Balinese tradition.
However there is no doubt that the highlight here is indeed the monkeys. Considered to be sacred by local tradition, these creatures are by nature playful and friendly. When called by the guide some monkeys will in fact climb down and perch on your shoulders. The visitor will be able to observe the natural behaviour of the monkeys, many in social groups, mothers with their young babies and the solitary large males. Babies can be seen nursing, whilst others are groomed by their attentive mothers. Anyone with an interest in these fascinating creatures will be enthralled by the sight of so many monkeys. However they will snatch food and other items from unsuspecting visitors and therefore due care should be taken.
