Located in Setail Street 1 in Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia, Surabaya Zoo lies over a sprawling 35 acres and offers a reliving contrast to the heat of the city, with its huge trees making a protective canopy for its visitors in most areas. With 351 species of fauna that include mammals, reptiles, birds and fish, the number of animal inhabitants amount up to at least 2,806. The KBS as it is often called, is excellent proof of Indonesia’s huge bio diversity and it is also home to many endangered species in the country.
The KBS was established in 1916 while the area was under the Dutch governance and owes its origin to one journalist named H.F. K Kommer who was an animal collector. The zoo changed its location several times to end up at its present site and is the oldest one in Indonesia and a popular tourist attraction.  Greeted by a depicted battle between crocodile and shark, a visitor will be pleasantly surprised to see elephants wandering about freely in a limited paddock. The other important thing about the zoo, is that it is a breeding place, especially for rare species like ’Jalak Bali’ which is found on the Bali islands and is also known to have released 40 other species to the West Bali National Park. Catch a glimpse of the Orang-utan, the Proboscis monkeys as well as the enclosure where lions dwell or the habitat of hippos. There are always nocturnal houses where the palm civets dwell and the aquarium with its vibrant coloured fish is something even a child would admire at first sight.
