Located in the Hambantota district of the beautiful island nation of Sri Lanka is the village of Kalametiya. This quaint fishing village is a coastal wetland and is known for its rich biodiversity. The area is also popular for its rich mangrove forests and lagoon, which are home to many fascinating forms of wildlife. The area has been designated as a special site for environmental protection and sustainable development as well. A great way to get around the island and to such locales is to rent car. Sri Lanka features companies such as Malkey Rent A Car which offers a variety of vehicles to choose from both with or without driver.

One of the most popular attractions of this area is the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary. Located roughly 1km away from Ranna, between Tangalle and Hambanthota, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is one of Sri Lanka’s most amazing reserves for birds. It also has a reputation for being one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in Sri Lanka, as it was established way back in 1938. Home to a variety of species of plants and trees, as well as numerous endemic and migratory species of avifauna, any lover of nature is sure to be spellbound by what it has to offer.

Initially sprawling over a 2,500 hectare area, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary was eventually downsized in 1984, but nevertheless boasts breathtaking beauty. It is home to at least 150 species of avifauna, and visiting the sanctuary during the season spanning from September through March gives visitors unparalleled opportunities to witness these species of birds in their natural habitat. 54 of these species are migratory. However, the main highlights of the sanctuary are the Glossy Ibis’, Sri Lankan Black-capped Purple Kingfishers, Jungle Fowls, and the Indian Reef Herons; four rare and threatened species of avifauna. Although the sanctuary is primarily known for its birds, a visit to the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary also offers you the opportunity to witness mammals such as Torque Monkeys and Tree Mice, as well as many species of reptiles and fish. Thus, all in all, this sanctuary promises to be a memorable nature and wildlife experience.
