Possibly the most unique and interesting temple in Vietnam is the Van Thuy Tu Temple. While most temples in Vietnam are dedicated to Buddhism or other deities, the Van Thuy Tu Temple is dedicated to whales, specifically a legendary whale. This legendary whale, which is said to have wandered the seas somewhere around the 1700’s and saved fisherman who were stranded at sea due to bad weather. Thus, in 1762, a temple was built in this whale’s honor.

Whale worship was common in Vietnam several centuries ago, and the Van Thuy Tu Temple is a symbol of this. The temple boasts the architecture of traditional fishing village houses; simple, yet elegant. Along the walls and doorways one will also observe many carvings and sculptures of dragons and unicorns. There are also shrines to the Sea Gods and other deities in Vietnamese culture. One of the most fascinating features of this temple is that it houses the skeletons of many whales! These gigantic skeletal structures are not a sight you see every day; especially the 22m long whale skeleton which is believed to be the longest whale skeleton in Asia. There are skeletal structures of over 100 whales at this temple, and visitors are also allowed to touch the skeletons. There is no doubt that the Van Thuy Tu Temple is one of the most unique temples in Vietnam, so go ahead and take a tour of it.
