No other attraction in Vietnam is popular just as much as it is controversial as the War Remnants Museum. Formerly known as the Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes, the War Remnants Museum attempts to chronicle and retell the harrowing and bitter stories of the Vietnam War. The reason this museum in particular is of immense popularity has to do with its focus on the atrocities suffered by the civilians of Vietnam. For the most part of the Vietnam War, the west was shielded from the brutality of the situation on the ground, and by depicting the real situations and stories of the war; the War Remnants Museum gives its visitors a harrowing account of the futility and brutality of war.
The museum boasts a collection of rare items and equipment used in the war such as rifles, grenades, pistols and knifes used by the forces of both sides. In addition to this, the museum also houses a captured US helicopter, a tank used in combat, two fighter and bomber aircraft, and even a model of the notorious “tiger cages” used to imprison political prisoners by the Viet Cong. However, the most significant exhibitions are those which show the suffering endured by the civilians. These include picture galleries of the infamous My Lai Massacre, images of victims of napalm and chemical weapons, and the plight that children faced due to the war. There is also a special exhibition for the many photographers who were killed while trying to capture the images of the conflict.
