Perth, Australia is known more for its business aspects – the high profile companies, Perth event venues – than as a destination for the tourist. Even the hotels in the area like COMO The Treasury, Perth cater to business travellers than to the regular tourist. However, there are some “touristy” activities that you can engage in while in the city, such as visiting the Swan River; the local favourite hang-out spot for those who go solo, duo, and as families.
The Swan Lake is rather unique in its shape, winding in and out creating a twisting and turning flow of water. It is the belief of the Aboriginals – the original residents of Australia – that the river was created by Waugal, the rainbow serpent. That sheds certain light to the shape of the river. Whether it was the creation of an ethereal being or a creative work of nature, the Swan River is a popular place for the locals to spend a day outdoors. There are several parks established by the riverside where families often go to enjoy a picnic. Most of these parks are complete with cycling tracks as well as hiking trails for the visitor to explore. Some prefer to use the water body as a part of the fun and engage in fishing, sailing, swimming and even in kayaking. There are river cruises that are commercially operated so you can take a cruise down the river and explore the scenery between Perth and Fremantle. There are cruises that run the other way, towards the Swan Valley, which is the oldest grape-growing area in Western Australia. You can take a day trip to a vineyard, enjoy the local produce and spend a day absorbing the local spirit. Swan River provides just enough enjoyment for the business traveller who wishes to see the country but is operating within time constraints.
