The Melbourne Museum, located in the heart of Carlton Gardens, offers an enriching exploration of natural history, culture, and innovation. As one of Australia’s most prominent museums, it showcases diverse exhibits that span from ancient fossils to cutting-edge science. With its striking architecture and a variety of educational programmes, the Melbourne Museum provides a comprehensive and dynamic learning experience.

It Was Once a Car Park
The buildings in and around the Museum area were repeatedly torn down and rebuilt to suit the changing needs of the era. As cars gained popularity, the western and northern sections were converted into parking lots. Thankfully, more visionary minds eventually took charge, relocating the car park underground during the construction of the Melbourne Museum. Although studio apartments in Melbourne weren’t a popular thing in the past, today, you’ll find the museum with easy access to places like the Oakwood Premier Melbourne.
It Was Also a Racetrack
What started as a cycling velodrome soon transformed into a motorsport racetrack. The Melbourne Exhibition Speedway, active from 1928 to 1936, became known as the birthplace of motorcycle sidecar speedway racing. It’s hard to imagine the roar of motorcycles tearing around the area today, isn’t it?
The Emergence of the Forest Trees
Moving mature trees is challenging enough, let alone bringing them into a museum. The designers of the Forest Gallery had the bold idea to recreate the Mountain Ash forests of Victoria’s highlands, using 12-metre-tall trees salvaged from logging areas east of Melbourne.
Its Opportunities for Children
The Melbourne Museum has always dedicated a space for kids, but five years ago, it took things to the next level. The Pauline Gandel Children’s Gallery quickly became a favourite among parents, kids, and staff. This world-class space was one of the first public learning areas designed specifically for babies to five-year-olds.
