Qingdao (which means ‘Blue-Green Island’) is widely regarded as one of the cleanest, most beautiful cities in China. Those who visit Qingdao will readily attest that there is no other place like it in all of China. The historic city was once colonised by the Germans, who left an indelible mark on the cityscape. The German influence can clearly be seen in the local architecture and even in the local cuisine. It is an interesting place to visit and makes for a pleasant break from the noise and congestion of busier places such as Beijing or Shanghai.

There are many interesting places to see in Qingdao, the Zhan Bridge is one of them. The Zhan Bridge, also known as the Qinhai Bridge, is not really a bridge at all; it is actually a pier and less popularly known as the Grand Pier. The pier extends almost half a kilometre into the sea and is ten metres wide, giving plenty of space for its many visitors. It is a highly scenic spot and provides visitors with gorgeous vistas of the ocean and the surrounding area. It is nice place to take in the view and to people watch.

At the southern end of the bridge one will come across the Huilan Pavilion. The traditional Chinese building is usually used for art exhibitions. There is no entrance fee to enter the Zhan Bridge, although there is a small admission fee for the Huilan Pavilion. The Zhan Bridge is open to the public at all times, but the pavilion is only open during a set time.
