More commonly known for the fiery hot sauce that was created here, the town of Sri Racha has never been a highly popular tourist destination due to the lack of beaches; but of late, it has been gaining popularity thanks to big development plans. Situated between Bangkok and Pattaya, this one time, quiet town is steadily becoming a busy area, though still retaining its laid back feel. The old creaky, wooden piers still stand tall in the murky waters, but are overshadowed by the nearby international port.

Accommodation for travellers here is also growing, with more option now available. Hotels and guest houses are there in plenty, but a serviced apartment in Sri Racha, such as the Citadines Grand Central Sri Racha, are more favoured, thanks to the blend of homely yet designer atmosphere. There are still a few things that have remained the same, like the old squid rigs which can be seen moored by the jetties, to the fading Chinese-style shops where you can find everything from medical supplies to instant noodles. The local fishermen sit quietly near their respective boats, mending their gnarled nets for the next day’s catch also make for great photo opportunities.

There’s plenty to see and do here, like the health park along the seafront which serves as the heart of the local community. Visit during the evening to catch a beautiful sunset and then dchill at one of several coffee shops and sample the local snacks on offer. Near the Park is Ko Loy, a small island where you’ll find a turtle farm and a Chinese temple. Locals release fish into the sea here in hopes of good luck.

The Sri Racha Tiger Zoo is not the best of zoos, but is definitely worth a visit. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo has more to offer and is more geared towards animal conservation. End your day at Ko Si Chang, an island where nothing much has changed over the past few decades, offering a glimpse of the past.
