While Kyoto has plenty of interesting things to do for families, it’s also a great base for excursions further afield; here’s one such itinerary to enjoy with your loved ones.

Kyoto Tamba Park

Families based in the heart of the city at properties like Park Hotel Kyoto can begin their day by driving or being driven to Kyoto Tamba Park, about one hour away. This popular park offers lots of space to play and features a planetarium, tennis courts, baseball field and children’s playground, while events are regularly held here too.

From the park, it’s about a 50-minute drive to Fukuchiyama Castle; those staying at a hotel near Karasuma Oike Station can easily plan a trip here too. The castle which is a reconstruction of the original one has a folk museum and the surrounding park with its Sato Taisei Memorial Museum is worth exploring.

Japan Oni Cultural Museum

Next, visit the Japan Oni Cultural Museum only half an hour away. “Oni” is the name for ogres or demons in Japanese folklore and this family-friendly museum has plenty of them! Inside, one will find artefacts and various local and international oni masks, while the grounds are perfect for a stroll and feature various oni statues.

Hamazume Yuhigaura Beach

From the museum, it’s approximately a 70-minute drive to Hamazume Yuhigaura Beach. This idyllic shoreline is the ideal place to unwind and the kids will love playing in the white sands. It’s also one of the best spots to catch magical sunsets, while it’s famous for a beachside swing that’s usually set up from spring to autumn.
