Local Maldivian creativity knows no bounds, and it is featured on various parts of this splendid archipelago, from the Hukuru Miskiiy Mosque in the capital of Male to the handicrafts that differ from island to island. Even the elegant Maldives hotels that you base your stay in, such as the Adaaran Meedhupparu, features the work of local craftspersons which adds to the property’s appeal as a quality resort in Maldives.

One of the most distinctive disciplines of local craftsmanship comes in the form of the wooden lacquer-ware, which is unique as it is only produced on the Baa Atoll, in the island of Thulaadhoo. The local language of Dhivehi classifies it as “liye laajehun”, which refers to the intricate process of shaping and hollowing out the wood pieces to carve exquisite boxes, ornaments, and other containers. The wood used is the local Alexandrian laurel, and the pieces, when finished, are lacquered in strands of yellow, red, and black resin before they are then carved with flowing patterns. Mats are another fine example of Maldivian craftsmanship, as they are woven on Gadhdhoo Island by the womenfolk. These talented ladies fashion mats that span in size from door mats to those that equal the size of a mattress. The women collect reeds from a nearby island, and they are dried under the sun and then painted with natural dyes of various shades, which are then fashioned into the final products through handlooms. Each work is a unique creation inspired by designs from the weaver’s imagination and is a true treat to witness. These products are available for purchase either at the resort you are staying at, or on the capital island of Male, and make great gifts to take home.
