Conservation Efforts

This turtle hatchery is among the foremost in Sri Lanka and was established in the 1980s to up the protection for the endangered sea turtles. Whilst the main objective of the project is to increase the annual rate of turtle hatchings, they also nurse Turtles who have been injured as a result of unfortunate encounters with local fishermen. The project also carries out monitoring activities and conserves identified nesting sites.

Add it to the Itinerary

As Kosgoda is located along the Southern belt of the country it’s the perfect pitstop for those having driven down south for a bit of fun in the sun! Despite always being spoilt for choice when selecting accommodation near the hatchery, of all the 5-star hotels in Bentota, the recently revamped Cinnamon Bentota Beach is a great choice.

Volunteer

The hatchery offers a volunteer program for both locals and foreigners who want to get their hands dirty caring for these endangered reptiles. One can get hands-on knowledge about turtles, the threats they face with growing urbanization and fishing efforts.
