Built in 1787 within the Al Fahidi fort, the Dubai Museum is the main museum of Dubai. It is also known as the oldest existing building in the emirate of Dubai. The initial concept of the museum was to showcase the traditional way of living and to display the heritage of Dubai through artifacts and antiques, especially those attached to trading in the good old days.

The Dubai museum today has not restricted itself to being a traditional museum, but now entertains around 1800 visitors per day, especially in the month of April. The location of the museum itself speaks of the golden heritage of the country. The Al Fahidi Fort was dedicated to guarding the country against threats from neighboring countries. There are three towers on three of the corners built out of coral rock and a traditional boat referred to as a dhow right in the middle of the courtyard.

On the first gallery of the museum, there are old maps of Dubai. Most find the experience fascinating as so much has changed and developed since these times. The video journey offered at the next gallery takes you through memory lane as they show the changes from before oil was discovered to present-day Dubai. There is also a model creek-side souq along with a traditional dhow. Advanced technology has been used to enhance the experience here by including real-life sounds of a souq. This fine gallery then showcases desert life, which includes a camel, wild dessert animals and a date farm. The visual effects and the sound make the journey through the museum a very lively and interesting one. The wealth of knowledge that the museum has within it inspires you to linger longer absorbing the old world charm of Dubai.
