Galle is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island of Sri Lanka, and it is in good reason. In addition to housing many boutique hotels in Sri Lanka featuring establishments such as Mosvold Hotels, Galle contains much historical heritage, ranging from the incredible Galle Fort to the various hidden gems around many street corners.

The heart of Galle’s heritage lies in the Dutch-Colonial area of town, with the hallmark centrepiece being the iconic Galle Fort, which has in some way or form been in existence ever since the time of the Roman Empire and is now one of the island’s infamous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The views from the fort’s ramparts are breath-taking, but the Dutch Reformed Church contained within the fort is equally so. It is one the oldest churches on the island, and was built sometime in the 1700s.

Galle’s town is categorised in to two very distinct segments, new-town and old-town, which are in stark contrast. The latter retains much of its roots in colonial architecture with a quiet yet lively atmosphere and narrow-streets which pretty much prohibit vehicular traffic entering its territory. Here you can find various shops and cafes to explore. The new town’s atmosphere is quite bustling and contains the train and bus stations respectively.

If you wish to gain a thorough education on Galle’s history, then look no further than the Historical Mansion Museum. Situated in a historical Dutch-facility, the museum contains a vast collection of colonial furniture and paraphernalia. The museum also contains a shop where you can purchase a variety of mementoes and memorabilia.

Whether you seek coastal serenity or a historical adventure, the dynamic sea-side town of Galle has plenty in store, so be sure to take a visit to this renowned locale if you find yourself in Sri Lanka.
