The great sub-continent of India is no stranger to an abundance of rich and diverse wildlife complemented by flourishing greenery. Recognising this gift of nature, India established its very first national park, the Jim Corbett National Park, as it is known at present, with an effort to conserve and protect species by introducing Project Tiger and legislation such as the Wildlife Protection Act. At present, the country boasts of a stunning 104 national parks which surprisingly comprise of just over 1 percent of the country’s total land mass.

One such national park, in fact, the eighth smallest park, is found in Chennai and is known as the Guindy National Park. Spread across a square area of nearly three kilometres’, this Park may appear, upon first glance, as rather ineffectual, especially in comparison to some of the other greater parks in the country. However, not many parks can truly surpass the Guindy National Park in its beauty and panoramic views!

Governed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department at present, the Park was not always a National Park. In fact, the area was a game reserve as well as a residence for a former Governor by the name of William Langhorne. With an average temperature of around thirty two degrees Celsius, the climate provides a suitable environment which allows wildlife and greenery to thrive. As a result, over three hundred and fifty types of plant life can be found within its boundaries as well as an abundance of tree species as well.

The plush undergrowth also allows for fauna to thrive and animals such as the well known jackal, hedgehog, mongoose and spotted deer as well the more uncommon bonnet macaque, hyena, small Indian civet and three striped palm squirrel. However, the premises is mostly known for the Near Threatened Blackbuck.
