Journeying inland from Bentota and Aluthgama as you explore Sri Lanka’s sun drenched South Coast, you will come to a place where history combines with a rich cultural heritage. Rising up majestically over the landscape you will catch a glimpse of an immense statue of a seated Lord Buddha, gazing into the distance. As you get closer to this impressive landmark you realise it is part of something bigger, for here lies the ‘Kande Viharaya’ which when translated simply means ‘temple on a hill’.

Intrepid travellers planning to head off the beaten track and visit this relatively little known gem of an attraction have several ways of getting here. For a truly unique way to travel to this site, consider taking a river cruise. Sri Lanka is blessed with picturesque rivers and Yathra by Jetwing offers a captivating cruise on a luxurious houseboat along the Bentota River from where you can easily head to the Kande Viharaya.

As you make your way up the hill and draw closer to the temple remember that this is a sacred place. Buddhism is very much linked with the island’s history and such sites offer unique perspectives into this distinctive culture. Apart from the huge statue there is much more to see here at this holy site which dates back to the 18th century when it was founded by Venerable Karapagala Dewamitta Thero.

There are a total of 9 devalas within the site and what is unique about such places is that here you will find a coexistence between Buddhist and Hindu cultures; the devalas are dedicated to Gods such as Kataragama, Sooniyam, Vishnu, Kaali and Ishwara. Make sure to visit the Relic Chamber which showcases ornate Kandyan era paintings, while the Image House also features fascinating murals showing important events of Lord Buddha’s life.

To truly appreciate the tranquillity and sacredness of the site visit during a full moon or poya day when you can witness devotees offering prayers and following various observances.
