As the largest carved Buddha statue in the world today, the Leshan Giant Buddha looks every bit as imposing and awe inspiring as expected. This large Buddha statue depicting the Maithribuddha is 71 metres high and is carved out of a cliff and depicted in a seated posture with a serene expression facing Leshan city, as the river gushes past its feet. The exact location is at the confluence of the rivers Min, Qingyi and Dadu and is in the east part of Leshan city in China.
Its work was started by a monk named Haitong in 713 who believed that the venture would in some way be beneficial to those on sea voyages who were having trouble with the fierce waves below. Through several halts and pauses and sometime after his death, the project reached its completion and did indeed provide some relief to sailors as large pieces of rocks were thrown to the water which eventually broke the heavy waves and their fierceness.
This colossal structure of Buddha is very inspiring to a Buddhist who would be compelled to kneel down on his knees and worship. In more ways than one, the statue deserves admiration as its combines some amazing architectural elements, from its hidden gutters that drain the rain water keeping its inner space dry to the large cluster of buns embedded upon the head of the statue to depict coiled hair, etc. Needless to say that the area has been named as a UNSECO Heritage Site.  The mountain range where the Buddha statue lies is also alluring and it is believed that this mountain takes the form of a slumbering Buddha.
