In the south of the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, stands a magnificent little Hillock which boasts exquisite scenery, captivating legends and the most unique ecosystem compared to all of its surrounding areas making it one destination that must be visited in Southern Sri Lanka.
Rumasalla is centered round a very prominent legend involving the well-known Rama and Ravana the 2 mythical Hindu figures. In this particular tale Lakshman the brother of Rama was fatally wounded by battle and only one particular herb deep in the Himalayas was able to save him. It was the monkey God Hanuman who took up the mission of fetching it and when he reached his destination he forgot the name of this life saving herb. In his desperation he broke off a huge chunk of the mountain with a number of medicinal herbs and took it to Lakshman. When the necessary medicinal herb was removed Hanuman threw away the mountain chunk which apparently landed in Lanka and became the now famed Rumasalla. Rumasalla is literally translated to ‘Beautiful Rock’ and does justice to that in every way. It is surrounded by plains of Green and the fascinating beach side making it an all in one package of mystique beauty and relaxing tranquility. Rumassalla has been that one place in the island often associated with ancient folk lore. Some of its unique and unusual herbs have even believed to have unusual magical powers. Somewhere within the boundaries of Rumasalla the beautiful Ganga Pradeepa dwells. This sacred location turns Rumasalla from a mere monument of beauty to a symbol of peaceful harmony. Some other interesting places in and around Rumassalla include, a Buddhist Theme Park, an Elders Home, a magnificent statue of the Lord Buddha himself and a statue of Anagarika Dharmapala.
