Covering 58.3 acres of land, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is one of Tokyo’s largest national parks situated in the heart of the city. It is a famous hangout for all nature lovers looking for a little escape from the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s busiest cities. Originally the residence of the Naitō family during the Edo period was later handed over to the Imperial royal family in 1903. It was later heavily affected by the air raids during the Second World War in 1945 and was restored and handed over to the protection of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1947. It was opened to the public officially in 1949 as ‘National Park Shinjuku Imperial Gardens’ and in 2001 was handed over to the Ministry of the Environment in 2001 who changed its name to what it is presently called, the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Home to more than 20,000 trees the park sports three distinct styles. The Formal French garden with its symmetrically arranged flower beds blend effortlessly into the traditional Japanese garden with a little teahouse. The English landscape garden with its extensive sloping lawns and large trees add its own distinct charm to this beautiful park.

One of Tokyo’s most popular hanami spots, the ground beneath the towering trees are blanketed by a thick layer of cherry blossom flowers fallen from the branches above, already heavy with millions of cherry blossoms, give the illusion that one had just entered a pink and purple world. Between late March and early April, during the cherry blossom season hundreds flock into the park to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet with family away from the busy schedule of daily routine. Apart from the 1500 cherry trees of a dozen different species, the park also boasts such trees as tulips, cypresses, Himalayan cedars that tower above the rest and plane trees. The greenhouses also display over 1,700 bright colored tropical and subtropical species thanks to the horticulture work that has been going on since 1892.
