Negombo is dubbed the ‘Little Rome’ of Sri Lanka as the architecture, heavy presence of Roman Catholicism and social activities reveal certain traits inherited from Portugal during their times of invasion. Though Catholics are not the majority in the country, the statistics obtained from Negombo show a positive skew towards the Catholic population.
Drive past a dozen mangroves, coconut trees and some spectacular beaches on your way to the renowned St Mary’s Church in Negombo. The surroundings are vibrant, colourful and vivacious but do not hamper the solemnity and sanctity of the church. The winds that swirl into the church premises bring in warmth and rhythm to enliven the church mood. The sprawling grounds full of greenery allow for large gatherings and functions. The edifice itself is colossal, modern and beautiful. As you walk in to the building past the tall and magnificent white columns through the massive doorway you will feel the blessings of the Church twirl around you and put you in a trance. The same transfixed feeling will linger in your mind as you walk up to the altar and kneel down in worship.

However, the most outstanding feature of the church is the paintings of the life of Christ. In a gesture that proves the unity and harmony that prevails between religions in the country, it is revealed that the great artist behind the immaculate drawings is N Godamanne, a highly acclaimed Buddhist painter. As you stroll along the passageways at the Church you will see sculptures, drawings and a touch of local style in the patterns on the ceiling.
Spirituality and religion are an inseparable component of Sri Lankan lifestyle, and that only adds to the joys and merriment of everyday life. Negombo is undoubtedly very much like the rest of the country.  Practically every hotel in Negombo has a beach bordering it and needless to say the seafood is exquisite. The culinary skills of the local chefs are evident at every Negombo hotel and there is no shortage of sun, fun and culture while you are here. The Club Hotel Dolphin is located a convenient distance away from St Mary’s Church and has one of the best stretches of beach as its backyard.
