Sigiriya in Sri Lanka is an ancient rocky fortress that was utilized by a king who was a usurper of throne. This palace and rocky climb is named as one of the UNSECO world heritage sites and is considered the eighth wonder of the ancient world and indeed, its amazing architecture, sculpture, murals as well as constructions atop the massive rock deserves a great deal of respect.

Among the many attractions in Sigirya the cobra hooded cave is another unique, must see place. As the name implies the cave is in the shape of a cobra with a broad hood standing upright. That is not all that is special about the cave. It is believed that this cave is the place where the lady ‘Sita’ of the legend Ramayana was held captive. The link to this lady who was abducted from India and kept here by a Sri Lankan king ‘Ravana’ at the time comes from the inscriptions in the cave which mentions ‘Naguliya’ which is claimed to be Sita as she was named so by her foster father because she was found on the line of a ploughshare.

The ceiling of the cave is clustered with paintings which are a noteworthy addition and they are claimed to be as old as the pre Christian era. Of the many attractions in Sigiriya, the Cobra hooded cave perhaps falls a little behind in fame to the famous frescos, or the water gardens yet somehow manages to make itself appear in many reviews of Sigiriya. It is a place where people pause to glance at this curious rocky top that reminds of them of this deadly reptile who is also considered holy or respectable in some villages.

Set against the lush greenery that is contrasted well by the sight of the bold, dark shadow of the rocky fortress, many hotels Sigiriya enjoy unrivalled views from their many windows and balconies.
