Previously referred to as Victoria Park, this park is the largest in Colombo and is ideal for picnics and people watching.
About
The park underwent a restoration of sorts in the 1950s and was then renamed in honour of Queen Viharamahadevi, who was the mother of King Dutugemunu, who was one of the most significant heroic rulers of the nation of Ceylon.
Going in
There are benches to relax on and watch the city go by while tinkling water fountains and glistening pools add an ethereal quality to the shady coves and nooks that make up Viharamahadevi Park. Named after a beloved Sri Lankan Queen the park established by the British was previously dedicated to and called the Victoria Park; a huge statue of the British monarch sits opposite the road to this sanctuary.
What to expect
Being one of the more relaxing things to do in Colombo, catch street vendors selling delicious Sri Lankan bites to munch on, watch talented artists displaying their work on the side of the road next to the park as well as a beautiful play area for kids. Nestled in the heart of the city, the view from the park is magnificent, especially in the evenings as the sun is setting.
Vicinity
Located close to hotels the likes of Residence by Uga Escapes, there’s also a famous amphitheatre that features both local and international musical performances, making the park an essential visit.
