The Imperial Gardens of the palace constituted the Garden of Perfect Brightness, the Garden of Eternal Spring and the Elegant Spring Garden. The area is home to a series of temples, lakes, bridges, pavilions and halls of which only a few remain today. The Western Mansions of the palace is where fountains and gardens can be seen. However the year 1860 brought with it the destruction of the Old Summer Palace owing to the hostilities of the 2nd Opium War.
