Falconry while considered a sport in many parts of the world was once a necessity for the Bedouins. The desert tribes used to capture and train falcons to hunt for meat. Although falcons are no longer used for hunting, falconry is still a popular sport in the Middle East and the United Arab Emirates in particular. In fact, the falcon is the national bird of the United Arab Emirates and many government departments in the country use it in their crest. The falcon is a symbol of national identity and many regard the bird with great pride. So it is only appropriate that a Falcon Hospital be located in the country’s capital.

Opened in 1999, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is one of a kind. It was once a high tech medical facility providing aid to a variety of animals as well as a popular tourist attraction educating visitors on the ecological significance of the falcon among other things. The hospital treats over five thousand birds each year and also runs a ‘falcon hotel’ for birds whose owners are on vacation. Since 1999, the award winning hospital started conducting tours from Sunday through Thursday starting from 10 am and ending by 2 pm.

The tours are conducted in several languages including English, German and French. Included in the tour is a thorough walk-around of the museum and hospital, lunch, an opportunity to snap some pictures with a falcon resting on one’s arm, and the chance to witness free flying falcons. Those interested in taking the tour must book in advance. Admission price and booking details are available on their website.
