Managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the outstanding Central Park Zoo is home to more than 130 diverse species.

The zoo which is positioned just a stroll away from the 5th avenue, started off with just a bear and a couple of Swans. Central Park was founded officially in 1864 and by then it was only the second publicly owned zoo in the United States of America. In 1934 various zoo buildings were built at the site and the Charles Schmieder designed Sea Lion pool took a prominent place among the constructions. During that time the Sea Lion pool was regarded as an advanced architectural piece since it was built after extensively studying the natural habitats of Sea Lions.

The Central Park Zoo was revamped during the period of 1983 to 1988 incorporating more natural exhibits. Following a widespread renovation phase that cost a total of $35 million, the zoo reopened for public viewing in August 1988.

Some of the highlights at the Central Park Zoo include the Central Garden and Sea Lion Pool, Polar Circle, Temperate Territory, Tisch Children’s Zoo and the Tropic Zone which is also known as the Rainforest.
The Sea Lion Pool can be explored right at the heart of the park. Visitors will get one of a kind opportunity to view the acrobatic talents of the lions as well as join in the visitor feed. At the Polar Circle, visitors will find polar bears, penguins, puffins, the indoor bird colony and the outdoor polar bear pool.

Custom made for young explorers is the Tisch Children’s Zoo. It is a fascinating compact nature trail that features friendly animals such as sheeps, ducks and alpacas.

Open 365 days a year, the Central Park Zoo offers free entry for Children less than 3 years. The park is also disabled friendly and is easy to get to by mass transit.

Furthermore, there is numerous accommodation options located in close proximity to this impressive zoo. For instance, travellers can plan their stay at a luxury hotel in New York such as The Premier Hotel.
