Wat Pho – Wat Phra Chetuphon as it is better known in Thailand – is best known for the colossal statue of the reclining Buddha that it contains, the largest such image in Thailand. It also holds the distinction of being the most expansive temple in Bangkok, extending over some 20 acres. It is also the oldest Wat in the Thai capital, with a history stretching back two centuries. Further the temple features the largest collection of Buddha images in the country.

The magnificent gold plated 46 metre long reclining Buddha which stands 15 metres high intends to portray the Buddha passing away into Nirvana. The feet of the statue depict the 108 auspicious features of the Buddha whilst the eyes and feet are embellished with mother-of-pearl decorations.
The expansive grounds of the Wat feature a total of more than 1,000 Buddha statues, with the majority originating from the remnants of the former Thai capitals Sukhothai and Ayuthaya. The temple grounds are bisected by Chetuphon Road with the northern sector attracting the majority of visitors. Here you will find the large temple hall surrounded by 394 bronze images of the Buddha. Outside the hall the visitor will see numerous marble slabs describing the latter half of the epic Ramakien, as well as four stupas constructed in honour of the first three kings of the Chakri Dynasty.
Additionally the visitor will see no less than 91 other stupas of different sizes scattered across the grounds. You will also encounter rock gardens, chapels, bell towers, a multitude of statues of various kinds, inscriptions and numerous fortune tellers. The nearby library is elaborately decorated with porcelain pagodas and different kinds of figures.
Wat Pho also holds the distinction of being Thailand’s earliest university. Additionally it is renowned as a centre for traditional Thai massage which has been visited by many celebrities. On the walls of the temple you will see the descriptions of the art of Thai massage as it was practiced during the rule of King Rama III.
