Pondicherry’s Old Lighthouse is considered to be one of the city’s noteworthy tourist attractions and is regarded as one of its iconic landmarks. Before the construction of this lighthouse there was no sufficient illumination for the numerous trading ships that arrived at Pondicherry. Accordingly a committee was appointed to request the authorities to construct a suitable lighthouse. After some delay the project was successfully initiated.
The foundation of the lighthouse was put in place in 1835. In the period in which the lighthouse was constructed, its design was considered to be modern due to its distinctive architecture featuring a circular tower. The construction of the lighthouse progressed rapidly and it was officially inaugurated in 1836.

Even today the Pondicherry Old Lighthouse presents an alluring sight standing 29 m in height. You will see that the lighthouse’s tower is round in shape, resting on a four-sided base. The construction’s sturdy foundations are 9 m in depth so as to stabilize the building on the sandy earth of the area. The lighthouse featured three openings; a residence for the watchman, a store and an internal stairway which led up to the compartment in which the light was fixed. According to tradition the powerful light placed in the lighthouse was visible from 29 km in the distance.

Although the Old Lighthouse is no longer in operation, it remains an engrossing sight that will capture the imagination of the visitor.
